{"id":9,"date":"2021-11-20T17:57:35","date_gmt":"2021-11-20T17:57:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penny.scot\/?page_id=9"},"modified":"2025-11-28T19:26:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T19:26:02","slug":"susan_penny_indexing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/penny.scot\/","title":{"rendered":"Susan Penny Indexing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I am a professional indexer, and an Advanced Professional Member of the Society of Indexers, specialising in the arts and humanities, particularly history, literature and art.\u00a0 This means that I have the training needed to work to the highest standards.\u00a0 My work meets \u00a0\u00a0BS ISO 999:1996, the British standard on indexing, and follows the good practice guidelines of the UK Society of Indexers. \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since qualifying in 2021, my clients have included Birlinn, Bloomsbury, Happy Yak, Harper Collins, Thames and Hudson, and University presses, as well as authors who are publishing their books independently.&nbsp; I\u2019ve worked on texts for all readership levels \u2013 from emergent readers to academic level (you <a href=\"https:\/\/penny.scot\/index.php\/indexes\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"109\">can see some examples here<\/a>). One of the best things about my job is the diversity of the texts I\u2019m asked to work on.&nbsp; I love variety and challenge, and I\u2019m always learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By choosing to employ a professional indexer, you are ensuring that your text will have the best index possible. Indexers analyse the text, understand the needs of the reader, provide a \u2018road map\u2019 to concepts and produce a clear, accessible, informative way of accessing and retrieving information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Subjects Indexed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following list is indicative of the subjects I index, but it is by no means exhaustive. These are jobs that require you to become an expert in a wide range of subjects &#8211; from the basics up to A level and Advanced Higher: I have supported students with everything from Gaelic to Geology, and Sports Studies to Physics. Teaching students and young people information skills, and helping them with research, has given me a keen insight into the mind of the information-hunter and index user.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my spare time I enjoy spending time outdoors \u2013 swimming, gardening, walking, and  wildlife watching. I am chair of Mull\u2019s Riding for the Disabled Group.
